The small-group RIB to Pulpit Rock

Stavanger RIB takes 12 people at most on a high-end RIB from the harbour by the Maritime Museum to Fantahålå, Pulpit Rock and Hengjanefossen, with the captain doing the talking. Pick it for the small group and the captain-guide, on a schedule set round the cruise ships.

Small-Group RIB Safari to Pulpit Rock

About this experience

Stavanger RIB meets you in the city harbour in front of the Stavanger Maritime Museum, behind the fish market, under a flag that reads "Stavanger RIB meeting point". You get a flotation suit (sizes 2XS to 4XL), a life jacket, and goggles and gloves on colder days. The group is 12 at most, so everyone gets a good seat and the captain can answer questions as you go.

The trip splits into thirds: about 30 minutes at speed out to the fjord, about 45 minutes inside the Lysefjord, and about 30 minutes back. Inside, the captain stops at Fantahålå, under Pulpit Rock (604 m up) and close to the big waterfalls, with the history of each. Live commentary is in English and Norwegian, with audio in Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

Read the small print. The listing rules out children under 5, pregnant travellers and anyone with back problems. The schedule is set for cruise passengers, and the listing warns a trip may be shortened if there are delays; if it has to turn back before reaching the Lysefjord, you get a full refund. Fjord Norway notes that departures follow the cruise ships, and lists the direct price from NOK 1,390. On GetYourGuide it's from $147. Like every cruise here, it turns at Hengjanefossen.

Despite the choppy seas and the high speed, the pilot of the speedboat had everything safely under control!

Would recommend this as a fantastic way of seeing LYSEFJORD. Our skipper Graham was very good.

Great experience, highly recommended. Also suitable for younger children (from 10 years old, I would say)

Tips before you book

  • Bring outdoor clothing under the suit: the listing asks for it, and the run out is cold.
  • Under-5s aren't allowed, and one parent suggests 10 as a comfortable age. Judge your own kids.
  • If your ship arrives late, the trip may be shortened. Pick the slot with the most margin.
  • Ask for a seat near the back if you're nervous about bumps.
