LYSEKAMMEN · Stavanger Cruise Terminal

The guided hike to the top of Preikestolen

A black coach collects you outside the Stavanger cruise terminal, drives about 40 minutes through the subsea tunnels to the trailhead, and local guides walk you up to the flat top of Pulpit Rock and back. Pick it for the one thing no boat can give you: the view straight down the Lysefjord from 604 m.

Preikestolen Hike with a Local Guide

About this experience

Every cruise on this site shows you Preikestolen from below. This is the other half. LYSEKAMMEN's coach waits in the Stavanger Cruise Terminal parking area, right outside the ship, and takes about 40 minutes to the trailhead by way of the Ryfast tunnels. The listing bills one of them as the world's deepest subsea tunnel. The trail starts around 270 m above sea level, steep at first, then levelling out over woods, streams and open rock.

The hike itself is about 8 km there and back with about 500 m of climbing, roughly four hours with stops. Guides walk with the group, explain the landscape, and give you time on the plateau, 604 m above the fjord, for the photo and the view down the Lysefjord you'd sail on a cruise. A snack, lunch and water are included, which is rare on this trail. Guides speak English, Norwegian, Danish and Swedish.

Some caveats. It's a real mountain walk, not a stroll: the listing excludes children under 7 and low fitness, and asks for hiking shoes and rain gear. There's no railing on the rock. It's busy in summer, with hundreds of thousands of visitors a year, so expect company at the top. And it isn't a boat trip, so book a cruise for another day. From $136 per person.

Tips before you book

  • Do the cruise and the hike on different days, or take the combo. The hike leaves no time for a boat.
  • Bring warm layers and rain gear even in summer; it's windy and cooler on the plateau.
  • Wear broken-in hiking shoes. The rock is slippery when wet.
  • Keep back from the edge. There's no railing, and the photo isn't worth it.
  • Outside May to September, the trail can be icy: only go with a guide.
