Lysefjord from a cruise ship

Stavanger is one of the easiest fjord ports in Norway: your ship ties up in the old harbour, and the fjord boats leave from the same water. The only thing to get right is the clock.

Most cruise ships calling at Stavanger berth right in the city centre, along Vågen, the old harbour. The Lysefjord boats leave from the same harbour, so on a normal port day there is no shuttle, no taxi and no transfer between your gangway and the fjord. A few RIB tours are even timed around the ships.

That makes it easy to be over-confident. Port calls are often eight or nine hours, the trips run two to seven hours, and the ship won't wait for a tour you booked yourself. Here is how to fit the Lysefjord into the time you have, with a buffer you won't regret.

The quick answer

Your ship most likely docks at Strandkaien or Skagenkaien, either side of Vågen, a few minutes' walk from every fjord boat in this guide. With 5 hours or less in port, take a 2-hour RIB. With 6 to 7 hours, any sightseeing cruise fits. With 8 hours or more, you can add Preikestolen: the RIB and hike combo is built for ships in port at least 8 hours. Plan to be back on the quay an hour before all-aboard.

RIB tours leave from the harbour where the ships berth, and some are timed around them.

Can you do a Lysefjord cruise from a cruise ship in Stavanger?

Yes, easily. Ships berth in the city harbour, and every fjord boat on this site leaves from the same harbour, a short walk from the gangway.

All of them sail the same route: out among the islands, under the Lysefjord Bridge, past Vagabond's Cave and below Pulpit Rock, turning at Hengjanefossen, the Whisky Falls. That is roughly the first third of the 42 km fjord, and it is the part with Preikestolen in it. Kjerag and Lysebotn at the far end are out of reach on a port day.

You choose between a big quiet boat for 2.5 to 3.5 hours and a RIB for 2 hours. On a port day the RIB's shorter clock is a real advantage, and two RIB companies plan their departures around the ships. RIB or catamaran covers the ride itself.

Where do cruise ships dock in Stavanger?

Mostly at Strandkaien on the west side of Vågen, or at Skagenkaien on the east side. Both are in the city centre; on the busiest days a ship may use an outer berth instead.

The port lists four city-centre cruise quays (Cruise Norway port sheet): Strandkaien, the designated cruise quay, 309 m long with no size limit; Skagenkaien and Skansekaien on the other side of the harbour, for ships up to 230 m; and Konserthuskaien by the concert hall, for ships up to 280 m. The port is about 500 m from the city centre, and from the city quays you walk off the ship straight into town.

Old Stavanger, the white wooden houses, sits just behind Strandkaien; Valberg Tower is on the hill behind Skagenkaien (Cruise Timetables). On days with several big ships, one may be sent to an outer quay or tender in. Your cruise line's port notes will say. If you are not in Vågen, add the shuttle time both ways.

How far is it from the ship to the fjord boats?

A few minutes on foot. The big boats leave from Strandkaien and the RIBs check in by the Maritime Museum, all on the same harbour.

The FjordEvents listing puts its check-in about five minutes' walk from the cruise berths. If your ship is on Skagenkaien, you walk round the head of the harbour, past the fish market, to reach the RIBs and Strandkaien.

Which Lysefjord tours are timed for cruise passengers?

The two RIB tours, the RIB and hike combo and the guided hike all say so in their listings. Rødne may also add departures on cruise-ship days.

  • FjordEvents RIB: the listing promises a cruise-optimised schedule and a check-in a short walk from the berths.
  • Stavanger RIB safari: the schedule is set for cruise passengers and may be shortened if a ship is late. If the RIB has to turn back before reaching the Lysefjord, you get a full refund.
  • RIB and hike combo: described as cruise-friendly for ships docking 8 hours or more, with drop-offs at Skagenkaien, Skansekaien and the cruise berths.
  • Guided Preikestolen hike: the bus waits by the cruise terminal parking area. One guest wrote: "The guide picked us up at the ship's exit, and the timing was perfect."
  • Rødne's electric catamaran: regular departures, with extras that may be added during cruise-ship visits (rodne.no).

How long do you need in port for a Lysefjord trip?

Five hours for a 2-hour RIB, six to seven for a big boat, eight or more to add the Preikestolen hike.

Count from the moment you are actually ashore, not from the arrival time in the brochure, and leave an hour at the end.

We would not book the Flørli RIB day on a port call: it takes about 7 hours, with about 4 hours at Flørli, and it is not run around the ships. It suits a pre- or post-cruise night in Stavanger instead.

Twelve seats at most, a schedule set for cruise passengers, and a full refund if the RIB can't reach the fjord.

How much buffer should you leave before all-aboard?

Be back on the quay an hour before all-aboard. All-aboard itself is usually half an hour or more before the ship sails; your daily programme gives the exact time.

Here is the rule behind it. If you book the ship's own excursion, the ship waits if the tour runs late. If you book your own tour, it doesn't. A RIB that meets a headwind on the way back, a big boat held up at the goats, a queue at the gangway: an hour absorbs all of it.

Practical steps. Pick the earliest departure your arrival allows, not the most convenient one. Put the operator's phone number in your phone. Carry your cruise card and ID. And check the ship's clock against local time: some lines keep ship's time, which can differ from Norwegian time.

Can you hike Pulpit Rock on a port day?

Yes, with 8 hours or more ashore. The RIB and hike combo takes about 7 hours; the guided hike about 6 hours by bus. Both need moderate fitness and hiking shoes.

The RIB and hike combo gives you Pulpit Rock from both ends: a RIB under the cliff, a quay landing, a minibus to base camp and a guided hike of about 8 km and 500 m of ascent, then a minibus back to the cruise quays. From $285, ages 6 and up. The listing asks for hiking shoes, water and a packed lunch, and rules out sandals.

The guided hike skips the boat: a coach from the cruise terminal parking area, about 40 minutes each way, and a hike of about 4 hours with a guide, snack and lunch included. From $136, ages 7 and up. Either way you get the view the cruises can't give you, looking down the fjord from 604 m. Pulpit Rock without hiking explains what you see from each side.

Should you book the ship's excursion or your own?

Your own, if you keep the buffer: you get your pick of boats and the published prices. The ship's tour, if peace of mind matters more than choice.

Booking your own lets you choose the boat that suits your group, from a two-hour RIB to the quiet electric catamaran, at the from-prices shown on this site, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. What the ship's own tour adds is the promise that the ship waits for you.

Our rule: with 7 hours or more ashore and a 2 to 3.5-hour boat, book your own and relax. With a short call, an outer berth, or a combo day that leaves little slack, the ship's tour is the calmer choice. Whichever you choose, sit on the left side going in. Pulpit Rock and the Whisky Falls are on the north shore.

Frequently asked questions

How far is the Lysefjord from the Stavanger cruise port?

The fjord mouth at Forsand is about 25 km east of Stavanger. By boat from the harbour, RIBs reach the Lysefjord Bridge in about 30 minutes; the big catamarans take a little longer.

Can I see Pulpit Rock on a Stavanger shore excursion?

Yes. Every Lysefjord cruise passes below it, 604 m down. To stand on top you need the hike, which takes 6 to 7 hours door to door and suits ships in port 8 hours or more.

What if my ship arrives late?

Contact the operator at once. Stavanger RIB says its schedule may be shortened when ships are delayed, and every tour on this site cancels free up to 24 hours before, though not on the day.

Do I need to take a shuttle from the ship?

Not if you are berthed in Vågen: the fjord boats are a few minutes' walk away. If your ship uses an outer berth or tenders, follow the shuttle times in your cruise line's port notes.
