Lysefjord cruises in winter 2026-27

Most Lysefjord boats stop in late summer. One keeps going all winter, four days a week, and it fits neatly inside the short Norwegian day. Here is what runs from November 2026 to March 2027.

A winter Lysefjord cruise is a different trip from the summer one. The boats are emptier, the sun barely clears the cliffs, and the operator list shrinks to one regular departure. That boat is Rødne's electric catamaran from Strandkaien, and its winter timetable is already published.

This post sets out what we found on the operators' own pages in October 2026: who sails, on which days, how the daylight works out, and what you can add on land, from a guided Preikestolen hike to the stairs at Flørli (closed) and Kjerag (not without a guide).

The quick answer

Rødne's electric cruise sails Thursday to Sunday at 11:00 from November 2026 to March 2027, and daily from 25 to 31 December. It is back around 14:30, inside the roughly six hours of daylight Stavanger gets around the solstice. Brim Explorer's hybrid ship does not sail in winter. For Preikestolen from the top, Rødne runs a cruise plus guided hike with spikes and headlamps included.

Which Lysefjord boats sail from Stavanger in winter 2026-27?

Rødne's electric catamaran is the one scheduled winter cruise. Brim Explorer's hybrid ship is summer only, and the local ferry to Lysebotn runs all year.

Rødne lists its Lysefjord cruise from Stavanger as running all year, at NOK 890 for adults and NOK 445 for children aged 4 to 15, or from $94 on GetYourGuide as the electric fjord cruise. Fjord Norway names the boat as MS Rygerelektra, a fully electric catamaran, with the usual line that Rødne may swap in another vessel.

Brim Explorer is out of the picture until spring. Its Silent Lysefjord & Pulpit Rock Cruise ran from 18 May to 30 August in 2026. Helgøy Skyssbåt and the RIB companies publish no winter timetable on their own sites, which in practice means you open the listing, pick a December date and see what the calendar offers. Treat anything that shows up as a bonus, not a plan.

One more boat runs every week of the winter: the Kolumbus local ferry from Lauvvik to Lysebotn. It is a transport route, not a cruise, and it needs a car or a bus to reach Lauvvik. Our post on the 2027 ferry season has the details.

On which days does the winter cruise leave, and at what time?

Thursday to Sunday at 11:00 through the winter, every day from 25 to 31 December, then daily again from April.

Rødne's timetable on its booking page reads "Thursday - Sunday at 11:00" for October to December and again for January to March, with "December 25th - 31th Daily at 11:00" slotted in for the holiday week. April goes back to a daily 11:00 sailing, and May adds a 14:30 boat. The trip lasts 3 to 3.5 hours, so you are back at Strandkaien around 14:30.

Monday to Wednesday there is no winter cruise at all. If your only free day in Stavanger is a Tuesday in February, the fjord is not happening by sightseeing boat. Rearrange the trip around a Thursday if you can. Extra departures sometimes appear for cruise-ship calls, Rødne says, so a ship day can be the exception.

How much daylight is there in Stavanger in December and January?

About six hours around the solstice, with sunrise near 09:30 and sunset near 15:40. The 11:00 boat fits inside it.

Stavanger sits at 59 degrees north. Gaisma's sun table puts sunrise on 21 December at 09:30 and sunset at 15:41, a day of 6 hours 11 minutes, and SunriseSunset.io gives the same 6 h 11 min for the solstice on Monday 21 December 2026. By 21 January the day is back to about 7 hours 20 minutes; by late February it is close to ten.

The practical effect: the 11:00 departure sails in full daylight and returns about an hour before sunset. The sun stays low the whole time, which means long shadows and sheltered stretches of the fjord that get no direct sun at all in midwinter. Photos come out moody rather than bright, and that is half the appeal.

What is different on deck in winter?

Fewer people, colder wind and a calmer, quieter fjord. You spend more time inside, and the goat stop is a spring and summer habit.

The catamaran has a lounge with panoramic windows, leather seats, toilets and a kiosk selling baked goods and hot drinks, per Rødne's cruise page. In winter that lounge is where most people sit, stepping out to the deck at the cave, under Preikestolen and at the falls. Rødne's own FAQ describes the winter fjord as tranquil, with snow possible on the peaks.

Dress for a boat, not a city. A hat, gloves and a windproof jacket matter more than an extra jumper, because the wind on the open deck at 20 knots is what bites. Sit on the left going in: Preikestolen and Hengjanefossen are on the north shore.

Two things to expect less of. Rødne says the crew "often" stops by the mountain goats in spring and summer, so do not count on them in January. And low cloud can hide Pulpit Rock on any day of the year. Wildlife is never guaranteed, in any season.

Can you combine a winter cruise with a guided Preikestolen hike?

Yes. Rødne runs a winter cruise and guided hike from Strandkaien, Thursday to Sunday at 11:00, with spikes, poles and a headlamp included. Minimum age 8.

Rødne's Explore Preikestolen in Winter runs November to April on the same days as the cruise: Thursday to Sunday from November to March, daily in April. The boat leaves Strandkaien at 11:00 and drops you at Forsand quay at 13:20, where a guide from Fjordhikes drives you to Preikestolen Mountain Lodge. The hike runs from 14:00 to 19:00, then a minibus takes you back to Stavanger. It costs NOK 2,790 for adults and NOK 2,150 for children aged 8 to 15, with snow spikes "if needed", hiking poles, a headlamp, hot drinks and a packed lunch included.

Do the sums against the daylight table. In December you start up the trail about 90 minutes before sunset, which means most of the walk down is by headlamp. That is the point of a guide. Preikestolen365 says the trail is open year round but can be "slippery and covered in snow and ice", and recommends a guided tour in winter. Rødne's winter hike article says the same thing more bluntly: daylight is short and conditions change quickly.

On your own, in summer, the hike is about 8 km return with roughly 500 m of climbing; see Pulpit Rock with and without the hike. The guided Preikestolen hike with a local guide and the RIB and hike combo run on their own calendars; check yours before you plan a winter date around either.

Are the Flørli stairs and Kjerag open in winter?

No and no, in any practical sense. The Flørli stairs season is mid-April to the end of October, and Kjerag is a May to October hike.

Fjord Norway gives the Flørli stairs season as "mid-April to the end of October" and warns that mid-winter brings a risk of avalanches and slips on the steep slopes. The café in the old power station is a summer thing. The Flørli RIB and stair hike is a summer trip for the same reason.

Kjerag is further out of reach. Fjord Norway puts the Kjerag season at May to October inclusive and says plainly that the hike is not recommended in winter; the mountain road to the trailhead closes with the first snow, usually in October or November. Visit Norway adds that off-season Kjerag is for guided groups with skis or snowshoes.

Plan both for May to September. The guide the best time for a Lysefjord cruise covers the months in detail.

Frequently asked questions

Do Lysefjord cruises run in winter?

Yes, one does. Rødne's electric catamaran sails from Strandkaien in Stavanger at 11:00, Thursday to Sunday, from November 2026 to March 2027, and every day from 25 to 31 December. Brim Explorer's hybrid ship sails only in summer.

Is a Lysefjord cruise worth it in winter?

Yes, if you like quiet and moody light. The boat is warm inside, the fjord is calm and you get it with far fewer people. Low cloud can hide Pulpit Rock, and the goats are not a winter fixture.

Can you hike Preikestolen in winter?

Yes, with care. The trail is open all year, but snow and ice are common and daylight is short. Go with a guide and spikes; Rødne's winter cruise and hike includes both, from age 8.

Is the Lysefjord cruise running on Christmas Day?

Rødne's timetable lists daily 11:00 departures from 25 to 31 December 2026. Book ahead; it is the one week of winter with a daily boat.
