Booking choice: The electric fjord cruise, from $94 per person. Check dates Tour details
Stavanger sits on Norway's wet west coast, and the fjord's weather is the city's weather with taller walls. That sounds discouraging, and it shouldn't. The big boats sail rain or shine, and the Lysefjord is sheltered once you are inside it. What you are really choosing is the odds: of sun on the cliffs, of cloud on Pulpit Rock, of full waterfalls, of a busy deck.
The numbers below are the official 1991 to 2020 averages for Stavanger Airport, Sola, from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute via Wikipedia's climate table, and the departure times are Rødne's published timetable. No guesses.
The quick answer
Go in May or June if you can. May is the driest month in Stavanger (about 62 mm of rain) and the sunniest (about 226 hours), June is close behind and warmer, and both have meltwater waterfalls and very long days. July and August are warmest but wetter and busier. October is the rainiest month. Winter cruises run Thursday to Sunday at 11:00 on the electric catamaran, with about six hours of daylight around Christmas.
What is the best month for a Lysefjord cruise?
May, then June. They are the driest and sunniest months in Stavanger, the waterfalls are at their fullest, and the summer crowds haven't fully arrived.
The case for late spring is strong on paper. May averages about 62 mm of rain over 10 wet days, the least of the year, and about 226 hours of sunshine, the most. June is nearly as dry and about 2.5 °C warmer. Snow is still melting on the plateau, so the falls along the north shore run hard, and Hengjanefossen throws spray across the deck. The birch on the ledges turns a bright, fresh green.
Every boat is running by then. Rødne sails daily at 10:00 and 14:30 in May, Brim Explorer's hybrid ship starts in mid-May, and Rødne's scenic car ferry to Lysebotn starts on 15 May. July and August are warmer and have the most departures, but they are noticeably wetter, and on cruise-ship days the decks fill.

What is the weather like on the Lysefjord month by month?
Mild and wet. Average temperatures run from about 2 °C in January to about 16 °C in July and August, and rain falls on 10 to 17 days a month.

Wet days count 1 mm of rain or more. On the water it feels several degrees colder than these town averages, and colder still on a RIB at speed. Rødne may add extra departures on cruise-ship days.
What is the rainiest month in Norway?
In Stavanger, October: about 148 mm over 17 wet days. Along the west coast, autumn and early winter are the wettest stretch of the year.
September to December all bring more than 130 mm a month at Sola, and October tops the list. Rain alone is not a reason to cancel: Rødne's listing says "we sail rain or shine", the big boats have warm lounges, and the waterfalls are at their most dramatic after a wet week. Cloud is the real risk, because a low ceiling can hide the top of Preikestolen.

Rain or shine, warm inside: the electric catamaran sails in every month of the year.
Check dates for the electric fjord cruiseCan you cruise the Lysefjord in winter?
Yes. Rødne's electric catamaran sails Thursday to Sunday at 11:00 from October to March, and daily from 25 to 31 December. Some other boats, the hybrid ship among them, stop for the season.
A winter cruise is a different trip, and a good one. The decks are quiet, snow often dusts the clifftops, and the low sun lights the walls from the side. The 11:00 departure returns at about 14:30, inside the short day. Dress for wind on deck: a hat, gloves and a proper jacket.
What closes: Brim Explorer's hybrid ship ran only from 18 May to 30 August in 2026 (brimexplorer.com). Rødne's car ferry to Lysebotn stops at the end of September, the road down to Lysebotn shuts with the first snow, and the Flørli stairs are out of season from November. The Preikestolen hike turns into an icy winter route best done with a guide. More in our winter 2026-27 post.

How many hours of daylight are there?
About six hours around 21 December and about 18.5 hours in late June. There is no midnight sun this far south, but summer evenings barely get dark.
On the shortest day the sun rises at about 09:30 and sets at about 15:40 in the Stavanger area (timeanddate.com). The June solstice gives roughly 12 hours more. In practice that means one winter cruise a day, timed for the light, and in summer the freedom to take the 14:30 boat and still have a long evening in town.
Light changes the photos too. The low winter sun gives long shadows and soft colour all day; the high summer sun is brighter and harsher around midday, which is one more reason to like the 10:00 or 14:30 boats.

When do the boats sail through the year?
The electric catamaran all year; the hybrid ship from mid-May to late August; the RIBs most of the year, daily in the high season. Check smaller operators for your date.
- Rødne, electric catamaran: three departures a day in June to August, two in May and September, one in April, and Thursday to Sunday in winter (rodne.no).
- Brim Explorer, hybrid ship: daily at 10:00 and 14:30 in its summer season.
- FjordEvents RIB: listed for every season, with departures every day in the high season (Fjord Norway).
- Stavanger RIB: timed around the cruise ships in port, so the most choice on ship days.
- Helgøy Skyssbåt and Fjord Xplore: check the listing calendar for your date.

In summer only: the cheapest seat on the fjord, on a quiet hybrid ship with a live English guide.
Explore the hybrid ship cruise Tour detailsWhat is the cheapest month for a Lysefjord cruise?
There isn't one, really. Rødne charges NOK 890 for an adult in every season. The cheapest single trip online, the hybrid ship, only runs in summer.
Lysefjord cruise prices don't follow the seasons the way hotels do. Rødne's adult fare is the same in January and July, children aged 4 to 15 pay NOK 445, and under-4s go free. Online from-prices move a little with demand and the exchange rate, not by month.
The odd twist: the lowest online price, Brim Explorer's hybrid ship from $83, is a summer-only trip. Outside summer the cheapest seats are the low-emission catamaran from $90 and the electric catamaran from $94. Where winter saves you money is in crowds: you will not be fighting for the left-hand rail.
Two fast hours by RIB to Pulpit Rock and the Whisky Falls, in the season that suits you.
Check dates for the RIB tourWhat time of day is best for a Lysefjord cruise?
The morning boat, in most cases. It leaves you the afternoon as a buffer for weather or a change of plan.
If the morning is clear, go: cloud can build later and settle on the plateau, hiding Preikestolen. In summer, the 14:30 boat on a sunny day is lovely too, with the long evening after it. On a port day, take the earliest departure your ship's arrival allows; our cruise-ship guide covers the buffers.
Whatever the hour, sit on the left side going in. Preikestolen and the Whisky Falls are on the north shore, and that is where the boats slow down.

Frequently asked questions
Is September a good time for a Lysefjord cruise?
Yes, if you pack for rain. September is mild, about 13 °C on average, quieter than August, the electric catamaran still sails twice a day, and Rødne's car ferry to Lysebotn runs until late in the month. It is also one of the wetter months, with about 132 mm of rain.
Do Lysefjord cruises run in winter?
Rødne's electric catamaran does: Thursday to Sunday at 11:00 from October to March, plus daily between Christmas and New Year. Most other boats pause until spring.
When are the waterfalls biggest?
In late spring and early summer, when snow melts on the plateau, and after heavy rain. May and June are the safest bet.
Is a Lysefjord cruise worth it in the rain?
Usually, yes. The big boats have warm lounges, the fjord is sheltered, and the waterfalls run hardest after rain. Low cloud is the bigger risk, since it can hide Pulpit Rock.
